Burnt Ember Bastogne Walnut Executive Desk
Burnt Ember is an executive desk built from a single slab of Bastogne walnut that survived a fire. The tree stood in the Pacific Northwest for eighty to a hundred years, and somewhere in that life a fire reached it — close enough to scar it, not close enough to take it down. The char still runs along the crook of the wood, dark and permanent: a record of what the tree lived through before it ever met a saw. Bastogne walnut is a natural hybrid of English and Claro walnut. Every slab comes from a tree that happened to grow, happened to fall, and happened to be milled before it rotted. It grows dense, denser than any other walnut on the continent, and cut close to the heart of the tree the compression grain throws a chatoyance that shifts and moves as the light changes. Heartwood darkens through chocolate and amber; pale gold sapwood glows at the edges. The slab arrived with a void running most of its length and a section barely holding on. The common move is to pour resin into the void and let the resin hold the wood together. I did something else — ten hand-cut ebony bow ties, five to a side, set into the slab before a saw ever touched it. The bow ties do the structural work. The black resin follows only where it’s needed, along the fire scar. The wood leads; the resin completes the line. Finished by hand with Rubio Monocoat European Oil, which bonds with the wood fibers rather than sitting on top of them, and set on a custom curved steel base chosen to mirror the wood’s own curves rather than impose geometry on them. One of one — built to spend the next hundred years as the surface someone does their actual work on.
